Yamuna River Reaches Alarming Levels, Deluge in Delhi: CM Appeals for Assistance

Delhi is facing a crisis as the water level of the Yamuna River has surged to a historic high, resulting in widespread flooding of homes, markets, and crucial roads. With hundreds of individuals being evacuated, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has urgently reached out to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking immediate aid. On Wednesday evening, the Yamuna River recorded a height of 207.71 meters, surpassing the previous 45-year-old record of 207.49 meters.

Kejriwal's plea to Shah emphasized that Delhi has not experienced heavy rainfall in the past three days. The severe flooding situation is primarily due to the discharge of water from Haryana's Hathnikund Barrage. Kejriwal urged Shah to intervene and request Haryana to regulate the release of water from the barrage, mitigating the escalating crisis in the national capital.

In the face of rising water levels in the Yamuna River, over 23,000 individuals have been evacuated from the surrounding areas, according to an official statement. The Delhi Government reported that 21,092 people are currently seeking shelter in tents and relief camps, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rescuing 1,022 individuals. The water level of the Yamuna River in Delhi has slightly decreased to 208.63 meters, providing some relief. Despite this, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has urged residents of flood-affected areas to stay at home unless necessary, as the river's water level is expected to peak and then recede. The flood situation has caused traffic disruptions and the closure of schools, colleges, and government offices in Delhi. Authorities are actively coordinating rescue efforts and ensuring public safety during this emergency situation.
